ROCK HOUSE

Location Southampton, New York

Status Under Construction

  • At the end of a discreet alley, removed from buzzy Southampton, a photographer and avid paddle boarder found her slice of heaven on the bay. The site has direct water access, serene views, and abundant wildlife.  Tight to neighboring homes and a shared access easement, the overarching design goal was to maximize privacy while simultaneously maintaining an interior connection to the waterfront.

The home was conceived as a cluster of modern ‘rocks’ stacked on the shore. The blocks are completely solid on three sides with large glass openings directed toward the water and sky. Throughout the seasons, portrait-style windows frame a changing perspective as one moves through all interior spaces, including the four compact bedrooms.  The opaque blocks provide ample privacy for an equally generous exterior living area that includes a small plunge pool, rock-faced fireplace, and outdoor kitchen fit for a truly bohemian lifestyle.
