SURF HOUSE

Location Montauk, New York

Status Completed 2022

  • This summer retreat for a family of six surfers sits just a few short blocks North from the iconic Ditch Plains Beach in Montauk, NY. Upon initial approach, twin gable volumes appear to float gently over the landscape with an overall scale in keeping with the surrounding established neighborhood. The sun-bleached cedar façade is volumetrically cut with large expanses of glass and a cantilevered roof, blurring the threshold between interior and exterior space.

With a compact lot and large family, the resulting design was an exercise in efficient planning. Stacking all bedrooms to the North, afforded a large open interior and exterior living area to the South. Additional features tailored to the family include a surfboard workshop under the deck and a crow’s nest for morning swell checks.

In true surfer fashion, the result is a house that is strikingly bold, yet simultaneously welcoming and chill. The home ultimately facilitates the family’s casual and breezy lifestyle that always welcomes informal gatherings of neighbors and friends.
